Here's what the parents and students are saying...

“As a classroom teacher for many years, Kristen has a special understanding of students' styles, goals and approaches to learning.  She has an easy and fun way of brainstorming and talking with students about their own ideas, and then helping form those ideas into a cohesive and unique piece of writing.  Equal parts teacher, sounding board and cheerleader, Kristen enthusiastically guides students to trust their own voices while at the same time challenging them to dig into the deeper meanings of history and English assignments and then helps them communicate those ideas clearly and persuasively.  My daughter looks forward to her time with Kristen each week!”

Academic Tutoring

With over twenty years in education, Kristen understands curriculum design and implementation across the subject areas. She tutors upper elementary, middle, and high school students with a focus on writing and the humanities. Incorporating her unique teaching style of nurturing with high expectations, Kristen guides her students to success.

Building Strong and Confident Writers

Kristen works with her students to set individualized, specific, measurable goals. She teaches and models planning, organizing, initiating, studying, breaking down large assignments, and building long term habits and supports her students as they make progress toward reaching and sustaining their goals.

Executive Functioning Skills and Strategies

As an educator and author, Kristen helps her students advance their written work by helping them effectively express their ideas; clarifying and articulating their claims/thesis statements; and organizing their work into structured paragraphs. She teaches the skills of annotating, locating evidence, providing context, and developing analysis.

College Essay Writing

Using the common application prompts and individual college/university essay and supplemental questions, Kristen brainstorms; writes; revises; and edits with her students. Application essays are an exciting opportunity for the applicants to let the admissions team know more about them. Kristen loves working with her students to that end.

Summer Work

Summer is an opportunity for students to review and reinforce content and skills, and to practice skills and preview material. Using the trusting relationships Kristen builds with her students, she works with them to review and reinforce, practice, and preview specifically what they need to feel prepared for the upcoming school year.
